Are you dreaming of becoming a web developer working full-time designing or coding? Using the right Udemy courses to become so might not be as bad an idea as many people think.

My name is Michael and I started my career in web development by taking Udemy courses to learn the essentials. I spent some time finding the right course that would teach me everything I needed to know to become a professional web developer and then got started. Today I am working alongside developers who have been in the business for 20+ years and I get many offers from other companies despite being self-taught using Udemy courses.

At the bottom of this article, I have linked to the Udemy course that I was using to get started in the business.

You need to find the right courses.

Before buying all the courses You can find on web development, You need to take a strict look at what other people think. Having tons of certificates is not going to make you better than everyone else and being taught by the wrong people is not going to take you anywhere. You simply need to find the right courses and it can be like finding a needle in a haystack. There are many great teachers out there and also many bad.

What I did, was to look through all of the reviews and the course contents until I found the one that would teach me to develop full-stack web applications. This way I would be able to create my own projects with frontend and backend and that way keep myself interested. The course I started with taught me Node.js, Express.js, Javascript, jQuery, EJS, CSS, and MongoDB. Using my newfound skills I was creating a small portfolio to show companies when I applied for jobs. And luckily in the end a company decided to take me under their wings.

So is it a good idea to skip university and use Udemy instead?

Both yes and no. It depends on what You want to work with. Some types of jobs require lots of experience that you just simply can’t get through Udemy courses, but if your dream is to build websites and web applications for companies, then it might be.

I wouldn’t say that you should drop out / skip the university if you have the chance to do it, but for some people, this might not be an available option. For those people that simply can’t get higher education for some reason, Udemy courses are a great tool to get started and from my experience, most companies don’t look down on you for using Udemy. It all comes down to how much you actually know. So if You decide to go with the Udemy courses, remember to pay attention and master everything they teach you.

Never stop learning!

Using Udemy courses might get You started on your path of becoming a web developer, but if You stop learning and think that you are good enough, you won’t last long.

The world of programming is constantly changing and every day new tools and languages are being published. If you decide to stop learning it will eventually be the end of your career. My first Udemy course got me the job, but I promised myself and the company that took me in, that I would keep learning and always improve since it was my dream to become a web developer. After starting my full-time job I have gone through many courses and I have expanded my knowledge. Little by little you will get better and better and one day everyone will notice it too.
